Origin of the name:  Fatu Hiva means "the 9 parts of the roof"
Budget level: Inexpensive
Encounter: The Southermost of the Marquesas Islands,  magic and savage, gives a warm welcome to all sailors on the way to Panama Canal after long weeks at sea.

At a glance: Two main villages: Omoa and Hanavave (Bay of the Virgins). Population: 500. Fatu Hiva features a very abrupt coastline with giddy cliffs, getting smoother in the two bays where the villages are located. The Bay of the Virgins, in Hanavave, is toppped by amazingly beautiful basaltic peaks. It is a maginificent place to stop in and also world renown..

How to get there: There are not many connections to get to this island. You can get there for a short stop aboard the passengers-freighter that sails around the Marqueasa once a month. You can eventually charter a boat in Hiva Oa or fly there by helicopter.
