Pronounciation:
"Raye-va-va'e".
Former name: Vavitu
Budget level: Inexpensive
Encounter: Raivavae features a marvelous lagoon with some thirty motu. Its scenery and its beaches are grandiose, postcard quality and leave no visitor indifferent.

At a glance: Main town: Rairua (pop. 260). Total population: 1,000. A long coral bareer and some thirty motu of various sizes surround Raivavae. With a  marvelous lagoon measuring nearly 4 km in width in some places, Raivavae invites you to rest and meditate. The lagoon's white sand is without a doubt one of the most beautiful in all of Polynesia. A real jewal of the South Seas that everybody, almost everybody had forgotten.

How to ge there: An airport has just been completed bringing the island only 1h 45 minutes from Tahiti and, this way making it more accessible to tourism. The Austral Islands freighters stop regularly in Raivavae, to supply the islanders
