Identity The realm of lagoons and shades of blue, Majestic landscapes and abundance of nautical activities. The name "Society Islands" goes back to 1769, when Captain James Cook wanted to pay tribute to the London Royal Geographical Society (which financed his expedition) and to take into account the fact that all of these islands, close to each others, formed a "close society".
SOCIETY ISLANDS, This archipelago is composed of 2 groups of islands, about 200 Km from each other:
- the Windward Islands
around Tahiti, these islands live in the wake of their big neighbor, but know how to provide a charm and a real feeling of getting away from it all:
- Tahiti... the New Cythere
the largest, highest and most populated island. With a very mountainous center and a lagoon with an unsuspected abundance, without forgetting its small Capital City: Papeete.
- Moorea... the sister island
only about 17 kilometers (11 miles) from Tahiti, Moorea is an enchated island with a sumptuous lagoon and majestic scenery.
- Tetiaroa... Marlon Brando's atoll
the only atoll in the Windwiard Islands, famous for its magnificent lagoon and its exceptional scenery.
- And also the small islands of Maiao (to the South) and Mehetia (to the East).
- The Leeward islands
an hour away from Tahiti, here are the dream islands visited by the greatest majority of tourists. But keep in mind... that each island has its own personnality:
- Bora-Bora... the pearl of the South Seas
280 kilometers away from Tahiti, standing out in the middle of a large lagoon, which is at the origin of its worldwide fame. A first class hotel infrastructure
- Raiatea... the sacred island
the highest and largest of the Leeward islands, regarded as the cultural center for all of Polynesia, and the starting point for migrations throughout the Pacific, shares its lagoon with the island of Tahaa
- Tahaa... the vanilla island
encircled by a wonderful lagoon that it shares with Raiatea. The motus surrounding it are among the most beautiful in Polynesia.
- Huahine... the untouched
First of the Leeward islands, Huahine has a superb lagoon, and it personifies softness and serenity for all Polynesians .
- Maupiti... the secret island
the most remote and the smallest of the high islands, 11 km2, features impressive rocky peaks dropping straight down to an immaculate lagoon encircled by splendid motus.
- Tupai... motu iti
an atoll located 16 kilometers North of Bora-Bora : quantities of birds build their nests there and green sea turtles breeds on its beaches.
- And still more to the West, the atolls of Mopelia, Scilly and Bellinghausen, which are the last islands of French Polynesia.
At a glance: The main islands of French Polynesia are located in the Society Islands, where the bulk of the population lives: They indeed include 85% of the population over 700 kilometers. Most of them are high islands (except for the atolls of Tetiaroa and Tupai), with Maupiti, the oldest, to the West, and its 385 meters high, to Tahiti on the East, the youngest, with a surprising altitude of 2,241 meters (7,350 ft).
How to get there: - By plane: The Leeward Islands are about 1 hour away from Tahiti-Faa'a, and it takes less than a 20-minute flight to go from one island to the next. As to Moorea and Tetiaroa, they are both right "in front" of Tahiti. Almost all of these islands are connected by daily flights, but it is necessary to make reservations in advance. By boat: Moorea and Tetiaroa are easily accessible by ferries and by boats from Tahiti. The Leeward Islands are also accessible by sea from Tahiti, by way of small supply freighters sailing around the islands and taking passengers for a modest price. But the majority of tourists fly to the Leeward Islands ... and they are right: flying over the lagoons is a totally unforgettable moment!
