TAHITI
Access
to the center of Tahiti Due to
damages caused by the rainy season, the trail across the island has been shut for
over a year, beyond the Relais de la Maroto.
 For
many years, the discovery of the center of the island of Tahiti remains a fabulous
expedition. It is the territory of choice for the many guides who bring tourists
aboard their powerful 4X4 through breathtaking scenery, from the Papenoo Vallye (on
Tahiti's East coast) to the mouth of the Vaihiria river (West coast), in Mataiea.
But due to damages caused by the rainy season, the trail has been cut off for over
a year now, beyond the Relais de la Maroto, making a complete excursion accross the
island impossible. Considerable work has been done for over two years to improve
the access to Relais de la Maroto, located at 300 m in altitude at the heart of the
caldeira in the center of the island. An agreement has been signed in 2001 between
the Polynesian government and the French Army to complete and repair the "Route
Traversière". This does not discourage tourists at all, as despite slowly
progressing work, visitors come month after month to discover a valley with douzains
of possible excursions in search of many waterfalls and archeological sites. An unheard
of enthusiasm by nature lovers far from the delights of the lagoon. What remains
is to find solutions to complete the job and repoen the only way to ride through
the inside of the island.
