The ideal length of stay
A two-day stopover
If you get a chance to have a stopover in Tahiti, it is likely to mean that you are coming from (or going to) Australia or New Zealand. Enjoy your stay as much as you can and try to spend a day on the island of Moorea or on the atoll of Tetiaroa which are both near Tahiti. As you continue your journey, there is no doubt that you'll keep a taste of too little!
One week This is a very short stay that will give you a superficial idea of Tahiti, Moorea and, eventually another island in the Society Archipelago. Be aware anyway that jetlag often eats up the first two days when you will feel slightly drowsy. Optimize your vacation by going straight to Moorea (1st to 3rd day), then choose between Huahine, Tahaa or Bora-Bora (4th to 6th day) and discover Tahiti and its capital city Papeete (a quick visit) on the last day. If you are tempted to go to some idyllic little atoll, a detour to Tetiaroa could be considered for the day departing from Tahiti.
Two weeks This is the ideal length of time for a quick visit of the Society Islands and, eventually one of the Tuamotu islands for a good mix of high and low islands and to discover a true atoll with its exceptional underwater scenery.
If you are the kind of tourist who looks for quick discoveries, you can plan a visit to 5 islands: 3 days in Moorea, 3 days in Huahine, Raiatea or Tahaa, 3 days in Bora-Bora and 2 days in the Tuamotu (Rangiroa or Manihi), and finish with 2 days in Tahiti.
If you prefer to enjoy calm and serenity, making new friends and discovering a country and a culture with all of its authenticity, we suggest that you limit yourself to only 3 islands: 4days in Moorea or Bora Bora, to recover from jetlag, followed by a short week in another island of your choice (Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa or Rangiroa or Manihi, as you prefer),with your last days in Tahiti, which is full of wonderful places that few tourists take time to visit. Tour of the island of Tahiti
Three weeks A stay of a more reasonable length that will allow you to discover several islands in details and, most of all, to engage in many activities such as diving, surfing, sailing, canoeing, 4 x 4 excursions, not to mention visits to archeological sites. Take the time to appreciate your discoveries. Reach the Society Islands by boat, visit Maupiti, the most secret of the Leeward Islands. Fly to the Tuamotu (Rangiroa, Tikehau, Manihi and Fakarava) or the Australs (Rurutu and Tubuai). If you are planning to go to the Marquesas, one option is offered to you: a cruise aboard the Aranui. Three weeks to really get away from it all and meet a people with unique authenticity and traditions, nearly 2,000 km from Tahiti.
