Unlike what is usually believed, French Polynesia is not (or is no longer) an unaffordable destination reserved to the jet set. Few people know it, but there are indeed in Polynesia, alternatives to the luxury hotels usually featured in travel brochures: they are the guest houses and the small family-owned hotels.
These establishment are generally run by Polynesians who have built small bungalows or tourist lodges in their yard, on the beach, or on some family land. Most of the time, they are well maintained and are definitely the most affordable way to be lodged and certainly the best way to meet Polynesians, to get initiated to their traditional customs and to share with them the pleasures of simple things and a life close to nature.

Campgrounds: In some islands, you can find "pensions" (guest houses) also featuring a camping area, but this remains relatively rare because of tropical rains which, even if they don't last, quickly discourage the toughest camper!
If you are in search of authenticity and adventure, choose the Austral Islands
